The people at Yorlab are knowledgeable and friendly, we like to think that dealing with Yorlab is always a pleasant experience; customer satisfaction is an essential element of our past and future success.

The Company

Yorlab has grown steadily over the last few years; we believe our success has stemmed from our simple approach to business, we manufacture high quality products quickly and efficiently always trying to deliver a quality service to our customers, repeat business is the driving force behind our growth, so we try to look after everyone large or small.

Alex Davis Managing director

I joined Yorlab in 1990 and have work in most aspects of the company; I am responsible for developing and maintaining the business.

I am married to Kirstin we have 2 grown up children who are both at university. I enjoy watching rugby league where I am currently following the downward spiral of the Bradford Bulls with ever deepening gloom.

Mark Walsh Sales manager

I joined Yorlab in 2004 having previously spent over 15 years working in various laboratories.  I am married with 2 daughters, in my spare time I love to watch my beloved Featherstone Rovers rugby league team, I also enjoy playing golf and going for a drink.

Tony Mercer Head glassblower

Tony joined Yorlab from school in 1975, he is married with 2 grown up children, and he enjoys history and is currently writing a book about the haunted streets of York.

He is a Manchester united fan and he supports York City Knights the local Rugby league side.

Andy Sayner Senior glassblower

Andy joined Yorlab in 1982, he is married with 2 children, in his spare time he plays guitar in a local band, and he enjoys music and Malt whiskey.

Amanda Routledge Sales

I began working as the Sales Representative for Yorlab in June 2008 covering the M62 corridor. I have since built up a port folio of customers where I meet the requirements for new and existing customers.

I am married with 2 young children and have a pet rabbit my main interest is Jazz, Tap, ballet dancing and socialising.

Robert Queen Engineer

I am an Engineer for YORLAB, I built bespoke laboratory equipment to order and repair many different types and makes of commercial Laboratory equipment both in house at our workshop, and on site at our customer’s facilities. I also work with our Glassblowing workshop to modify and produce fixtures and jigs and other specialist items that are sometimes required by our glassblowers.

During my leisure time I work on my Classic cars, and carry out some vintage radio restoration, when this can be fitted in between household DIY and playing with my 2 year old Son. Playing with my boy wins most of the time.

Steve Hayton Despatch/warehouse

My job entails delivering chemicals, glassware and various goods to Yorlab customers throughout the North East.

I look after stock control and unload incoming goods to the Durham warehouse and then relocate them to our customers.

My hobbies include: music, reading and organising various holiday trips home and abroad for friends and family.

Kirstin Davis Director

I originally joined the company in 1990 working part time for Alex’s father Barry.  My role then was deliveries.  I left to go to university to study psychology in 1994 and in the summer of 1996 designed and implemented the company’s first website through the STEP student program sponsored by Shell UK.

After leaving university I worked as both a forensic and then later occupational psychologist for the Prison Service for 8 years, before setting up as an independent psychologist, which I continue to do.  In 2007 Alex decided to launch a Yorlab catalogue which I became heavily involved in and since then have stayed working within the company covering various roles.   Currently, as well as learning about the accounting side of the business, I am aiming to design our work so that we provide a more service for our customers. 

I enjoy reading, cooking and socializing and some reality TV shows!

Alan Askew Service manager 

I spent 21 years working for the purchasing department in an international chemical manufacturer. In 2005 I joined Yorlab to assist with business development.

I am married with two adult children and six grandchildren. My main leisure pursuits are gardening, walking and carpentry. For my sins I have been a lifelong supporter of Castleford Tigers rugby league team.

David Pywell Glassblowing manager

I joined Yorlab in January 2010 to take over the responsibilty of the Glassblowing operations, i have 30 years experience of working in manufacturing environments and i am already enjoying my role with the company and look forward to developing this part of the business even further.

I enjoy spending time with my family and take an interest in all types of sport especially cricket and golf.

Darrel Strickland Glassblower 

Daz joined Yorlab in 1990 he is recently married with a young family he likes to keep fit and he regularly plays football and Darts. 

Jeff Bacon Office manager

I have been with Yorlab for almost 25years having previously been employed by a laboratory supply company in Huddersfield.

My role within the Company is to oversee the placement of sales and purchase orders for our U.K. customers, and to supply product advice and information at their request.

My main interests outside the Company are bird watching(feathered variety only),walking and crown green bowling.

Julie Gill Customer service manager

I joined Yorlab in 2007 as their Customer Service manager which was a new role within the company.

My role is to answer calls and deal with as required, from taking orders, to ensuring that any problems that may arise are dealt with promptly and to our customer’s satisfaction. I also deal with our supplier to ensure a good service is supplied.

I am married with two grown up sons and enjoy walking, holidays and going out in my sports car when weather permits. 

Phil Galoway Despatch

Phil works from the York office he is married with a grown up Daughter he enjoys good food and is a keen diarist.

Ray Smith Production manager

During his 50 years of scientific glassblowing experience, Ray has spent the last 40 years at Yorlab.
He started as head glassblower and progressed to production manager he oversees the training of our highly skilled team and is responsible for the administration of the workshop.
Ray's hobbies include caravanning.

Delia Shutt Company secretary

I joined the Company in July 2000 as a Senior Accounts Assistant. I became Company Secretary in August 2002. I mainly deal with producing the Monthly and Yearly accounts, keeping the Quality System in force. I work part-time as kept busy with two children. I like a good night out with friends and family.

Amy Ray Administrative officer

Working in the Durham office I am responsible for the Durham sales accounts which involve me processing customer orders, dealing with enquiries and general customer service.

I also look after the purchasing for the office and try to make sure that we receive our goods quickly and efficiently to ensure customer satisfaction.

My hobbies include: Socialising with friends, reading and spending time with my family.

Andreas Cook Glassblower

Andreas joined Yorlab in 2009, he lives with his partner he enjoys Art and is a very keen snowboarder having spent four years teaching in the Alps.

Julia Holmes Credit control

I have been with Yorlab since July 2000; my role within the company includes warehouse manager/credit controller, stock control, receiving/despatching goods, sales ledger, chasing customers for payment, month end procedures.

My interests include cinema, cycling, walking my parents dog (Meg - so cute!), recently taken up jogging and joined an army training club (very hard work!) like to chill out with friends for a relaxing meal and a glass of red, also learning to speak Italian, love Dan Brown, James Patterson books  un-put-down-able!

Dawn Griffiths Marketing

Originally from Leeds, I relocated to York in 1991 to work for the local newspaper. I have worked for Yorlab since July 2008, after a background in media concentrating on graphic design, marketing and administration. My role at Yorlab is varied, dealing with the creating of our large catalogue of products, leaflet design, advertisements, mail shots and general administration. I have been married for nearly 10 years and have an 8 year old child. My interests mainly revolve around running, having ran a number of half marathons over the last couple of years.

Richard Porteus Accounts

After a long career with an international company I was made redundant before starting with Yorlab in August 2003.

My principal role is to maintain the Purchase Ledger, matching invoices with order and resolving queries with suppliers.

I am married with two grown-up children and two grandchildren. Various hobbies and interests including DIY, Gardening to be pursued more keenly following impending retirement!

Hugh Griffiths Warehouse

I joined Yorlab in 2007 when there was a need for a temporary driver.  Since then as well as helping with ad hoc deliveries, I work in the warehouse helping with packing and stock taking.  I also worked alongside Robert (our engineer) when Yorlab moved premises last year preparing the new building for the arrival of both the Glassblowers and office staff and also 'making good' the old building. 

I enjoy comedy, walking the dog and the odd glass of wine.
